Scorpio Season Musings from Lore Hershey:
We sojourn deeper underground in Scorpio season, which is from October 23rd-November 21st. The zodiac sign Scorpio is the archetypal ruler of our inner mythic Underworld realm, a place of deep intimacy within.
As a self-professed avoider of intimacy, Dr. Brene Brown, a social scientist and researcher on emotions, wanted to understand how to become more intimate with herself and others, so she conducted multiple studies on what creates intimacy. Intimacy – whether it is within us or with others and the world – needs trust and vulnerability. It also archetypally requires a descent into our Underworlds, to face ourselves, to really understand our root motivations, be willing to sit with the shame or pain we carry without judgment, and to lay down the armor we use to protect our hearts from showing up vulnerably.
Brene Brown defines vulnerability as “the emotion we experience during times of uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.” She debunks many myths of vulnerability, namely that to be vulnerable is to be “weak,” which is how many people are socialized. Yet, Scorpio season show us there is no courage without vulnerability.
Courageous change requires the willingness to lean into uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.
Intimacy, or “into me I see,” emerges when we show up with trust and vulnerability, when we cultivate relationships with our depths and the depths of others courageously. With this full moon lunar eclipse in Scorpio, we are meant to confront our shadows. To face the feelings of inner chaos and let our hearts break open. To be uncomfortable and grow.
When we give our shadows (often our wounded inner children) space to be heard, to be embraced, and to explore the full depth of our feelings without judgment, we start to slowly shed our defenses, blockages, and feelings of self-doubt that are trying so hard to protect us from getting hurt.
In Scorpio season, we learn to soften into our intense emotional experiences, to not blame or fix our shadow selves and inner children for any patterns that keep us stuck. Like the trees and plants, we shed our leaves that have grown too heavy and realize how our scar tissue covers our stems. We let go of control and judgment and learn to be compassionate with ourselves and others.
This rings even more true as November 19th marks the final conclusion of Pluto’s time in Capricorn, where it has been traveling for the last 15 years. We have reached the ending chapter and the integration of one journey of deep collective investigation of power, authority, and our governance structures – seeing where power is abused, where institutions are corrupt, and where total transformation is needed from the ground up within our psyches and within our societies. In our own birth charts and on a personal level, there is an area of our lives that has demanded total transformation since 2008. Something may feel day and night different from where it was over a decade ago.
We have gone through a deep renovation and death and rebirth process. Facing ourselves in the depths of the Underworld, much like Persephone with her choice to descend to the Underworld and become its sovereign ruler, we learn that vulnerability opens our hearts and allows us to be powerful. We choose to let go and change. We learn we are inherently worthy, and we deserve our own intimacy. Scorpio season invites us to make the unconscious conscious and practice deepening into our courageous vulnerability.
Wading into the deep waters of vulnerability requires the slow and steady work of building trust. When we find ourselves in the dark, how do we trust in our ability to grow our roots, conserve our energy, grieve, and let aspects of us that no longer fit die away? How do we allow ourselves to honor the final closing of this tremendous chapter of Pluto in Capricorn and clear space for something new, harvesting the hard-won lessons before we move forward?
We deepen and unfold underground.
