Spring is brutal.
Heralded by the arrival of Aries season, ruled by the element of fire, Spring is a time of rebirth and rebellion. Spring is upheaval, a rising against the old systems and cycles of past seasons.
The vulture kept appearing to me in the final days of winter and in spring's first, early days. Her wings cast shadows over my dormant garden and spread wide as she sunned them on the fence lining my compost pile. In a time when most other signs of life lay dormant, she appeared - a quiet reminder that we can survive even amidst the harshest conditions, even during seasons of chaos or when things seem impossible. She became a sort of guardian of my hilltop home, and I smiled every time she circled above me.
It is my hope that this vulture, the alchemical symbol of fire and the blooms of red maple, forsythia, and hellebore create a powerful vision and feeling of rising, resilience, and a little bit of rage against the grip of winter and seasons past. Each element thrives when nothing else seems to dare, symbolizing strength, endurance, and the fierce determination to rise against seasons, systems, and habits that no longer serve and transform them into something new, beautiful, and beneficial to everyone.
