Herbal Musings

Have you ever made yourself a cuppa fresh ginger tea?  Most months of the year I have fresh ginger at the ready for general wellness and flavor. The gentle flavor of fresh ginger starts to permeate and the first sip is always a sweet surprise on the palate. Sipping this tea is also nice when I’m on a car or plane ride to calm motion sickness and my frazzled traveling tummy.

The pungency of basil is no joke: put a whole leaf in your mouth and chew it up to for an eye opening experience. I love basil torn up in salads, added to my favorite stir fry (toss it in at the end of cooking), or I'll make an infused salt with those final leaves before it shifts to brown. Here’s how to infuse your salt: take fresh basil and layer it in sea salt or Himalayan Salt, and then let the salt soak up the moisture for about 3 days. After that, then crumble the layers all together for a FANTASTIC uplifting basil infused salt.

Aha, but then things go really off kilter when I neglect to carve out my sacred space time, not organizing my day, doing one too many things and feeling that my patience has been stretched from all the above. I've lost my shoes 3 times this week... anyone in the same boat?!

When this happens, I automatically reach for one of my saving grace herbs:Holy Basil orTulsi.  The botanical name for Tulsi isOcimum Sanctum orGratissimum. Just typing that name, “Sanctum” or “Gratissimum” makes the peace that I've been craving start to wash over me.

Motherwort's botanical name is, Leonurus cardiaca or lion hearted - she is just about to come into flower in my garden and has a tall straight prickly spine. She considered an herbal cardiotonic and works to increase circulation. She works on the heart as a diuretic to reduce blood pressure, help with palpitations and irregular heart beats. She helps us stay steady and strong. She is a mother to us and for us, at times she is for the ones that need mothering and other times she is the ones that need the resilience that it takes to be a mother.
Fire Cider is a, no joke, traditional medicine: it is so tasty and the combination of vinegar, infused with powerful decongestant oomp for sinus relief and spicy circulatory movers, makes this an easy go-to for winter wellness. It works with your natural health processes by stimulating digestion and get you nice and warmed up on harsh days or when you feel a little under the weather.
Bone Broth can be incorporated into the diet to meet a myriad of nutritional needs, serving as everything from a delicious sipping broth to a beautiful base for more hearty soups and stews. This nutritional powerhouse liquid is chock-full of magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium, supporting the body to refresh and restore itself. You can use it as a tonic to enhance your immunity and skin! If you are a non-meat eater, then just remove the chicken bones, and you’ll still receive most of the benefit of the broth.
There are so many bold herbs to access and in so many ways our systems crave these warming and soothing flavors.  Cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg star anise, and ginger all create circulatory heat, all are impeccable cocktail additions.
